GEODNET stands for Global Earth Observation Decentralized Network. Its goal is to build the largest Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) reference station network using token incentives.

The GNSS reference station network works by providing a correction stream for high-precision accuracy. GPS devices typically rely on signals from satellites that are over 16,000 km away, resulting in location estimates that can be a few meters off. However, by using a reference station, accuracy can be improved to within a few centimeters.

GEODNET's system allows individuals to install a geodetic-grade GNSS antenna on their roof, which provides a node on the reference station network. Individuals are rewarded in GEOD tokens for providing these reference points. The reference station network listens for satellite positioning signals and calculates the difference between the expected arrival time and the actual arrival time. This difference can be due to various factors such as signal interference or atmospheric disturbances.

The reference station network then issues a correction stream, which is available to devices within about 20 km of a given station. Devices subscribed to receive this correction data can achieve instant centimeter accuracy, making it ideal for applications requiring high-precision location data.

The applications of high-precision location data provided by the GNSS reference station network are vast and varied. The agriculture industry can use precision farming techniques to optimize crop yields and reduce waste. The construction industry benefits from accurate measurements and material placements, leading to cost savings and improved safety. In transportation, efficient routing and real-time traffic updates are made possible by GNSS data, which can also enhance supply chain management. Autonomous vehicles, drones, and self-driving cars rely on GNSS data to operate safely.

Consumer-facing mobile apps, such as ride-sharing and delivery services, require accurate mapping data. Scientists can use GEODNET's stations to study the earth, including early warning signs of natural disasters such as tsunamis and atmospheric changes, as well as weather forecasting and climate change research. GEODNET's GNSS reference station network has a broad range of applications and is poised to transform industries across the board.
